eGain Communications Senior Software Engineer Interview

Difficult Interview – Overall Positive Experience – Yes, but I declined – Mon, 7 Mar 2011

Interviewed Jan 2011 in Pune(took 5 days)
Very impressed with the organization's recruiting process. It was a grilling half day stay in Pune for me, when I was asked a lot of design based questions. This happened especially in the first few days of my job hunt and hence I could've performed better. The staff working seemed to be very qualified and intelligent and seems like a good place to work in.

Average Interview – Overall Positive Experience – Yes, and I accepted – Sat, 17 Sep 2011

Interviewed Nov 2010 in Pune(took a day)
The Interview had a written round with technical and analogical sections. It was followed by oral round of technical interview by a senior tech-lead and the team manager. The oral interview was not much on theoretical details of the programming language but at a conceptual level. This is the reason I accepted the offer to join eGain. In most other companies in IT the interviews are mostly about digging dip into theories and skipping the much essential ability to solve problems, which is what software development is all about. I am about to complete a year in eGain and I am fully satisfied by everything I can imagine, be it work culture. the quality of projects, the policies, and learning I had and the mentoring I got! It's a great place to work!

Very Difficult Interview – Overall Neutral Experience – Yes, and I accepted – Tue, 21 Feb 2012

Interviewed Apr 2010 in Sunnyvale, CA(took 2 days)
The interview went well. They spent time reviewing my resume and asked some standard situational questions. They went one by one over all of my past jobs. The situational questions were questions like: tell me a time when you… what you do if….. We talked about the future plans of the company. They asked me about sales. They asked me about what I was looking for.

Average Interview – Overall Neutral Experience – No – Thu, 13 Feb 2014

Interviewed Feb 2014 in Sunnyvale, CA(took 3 days)
1 phone interview, 1 hour and a half in person interview .

Interview Questions
Questions were pretty simple. A couple SQL questions and simple support scenarios. My only issue is with the later questions, interviewer seemed to want answers they required you to know how their support system is set up. Using Telnet, knowing what Server command and control they have set up to monitor the system status. Majority of my support work has been dealing with highly protected systems from classified government systems to highly secure cloud-based servers like the Amazon S3 servers. These systems use layers of security to protect them from hacker attacks. The use of scripting protocols and permission levels would be used, instead of the security laden connection tools such as telnet. I explained this to interviewer, which seemed to actually annoy him. He was hard to read. They were having a big support issue, and it looked like he had to take over to solve it. So interview became rushed at the end. The interviewer I met about the SQL questions, was very friendly, and I impressed him very quickly with my SQL and advanced Data Modeling knowledge. He offered my a great compliment that I had the skills they really needed on their team.

Average Interview – Overall Neutral Experience – No – Sat, 22 Mar 2014

Interviewed Apr 2012 in Sunnyvale, CA(took 5+ weeks)
I was referred to eGain through a non-profit employment agency. The first step was an e-mail questionnaire with the "classic" questions: describe my previous project, how I dealt with difficult situations, my desired compensation and why I would be a good candidate. This was followed by an on-site interview with what was supposed to be three people. The first was an engineer who asked me a few technical questions; I don't remember much about them, except they weren't too difficult. Next up was a systems architect who asked me how I'd design the infrastructure for a large-scale web service. The interview ended early because the third person, the VP, was not able to come that day. Although I felt things went fairly well, I did not hear from the company since. I e-mailed them a week later to inquire about my status, and only then was I told they would not be moving forward.

Very Difficult Interview – Overall Negative Experience – No – Fri, 3 Oct 2014

Interviewed May 2014 in Sunnyvale, CA(took 7 days)
I had an extensive phone interview with a person in the company to whom I would be reporting directly. we hit it off really well. I was asked a fair number of tough questions and answered them to the best of my ability, but nothing inordinately complicated. Then I was invited to drive down from San Francisco to Sunnyvale for a face-to-face with several of the staff there. A couple of interviews went fine. The last interview was literally the worst and most disrespectful interviewer I have ever met. The interview was a half-hour game of I-can- ask-you-things-that-you-will-never-be-able-to-answer. This guy would scribble things on a piece of paper in such way that I couldn't read it, and then he wouldn't bother to clarify. He would ask if I had experience with a specific technology, I would tell him no, and he would ask me a question about it anyway, and then snicker to himself off to the side when I couldn't answer. He couldn't even muster the human acknowledgment of shaking my hand or saying goodbye at the end of the interview, even though I had taken half-a-day to drive down there from San Francisco, an hour plus trip each way. He snagged the paper off the desk and walked out with it, satisfied with his written proof that either of his poor handwriting, that I would not be a good candidate, or both. I hope this isn't an indication of what it would be like to work there, because if it were me, I could never tolerate this level of antagonism and competitiveness in the workplace.

Interview Questions
lots of them that were about technology or functionality asked of me immediately after I had claimed to not know about it.
